A Spring Project For the Whole Family :: Creating a Fairy Garden

0

Spring is here and right along with it comes some beautiful weather. That gorgeous weather means it’s a great time to spend some quality family time outdoors.

One way you can do that is to create a fairy garden together. My family and I have made one in our yard and have really enjoyed it. And it’s super easy and fun!

Simple Steps to Create a Fairy Garden

Find a spot in your yard for the garden.

We have a spot in our backyard where there are two trees growing together but there is a space in between them. That space is the perfect place for a fairy garden! The tree roots provide perfect little nooks and crannies for fairy houses to rest in. If you don’t feel like your yard has a good spot for a garden, why not try making a small container fairy garden? Spend a few minutes perusing Pinterest and you’re sure to find hundreds of ideas for inspiration.

Take a trip to your favorite craft store.

You can make your fairy garden as unique as you want it to be. That’s part of what makes it so fun! Michael’s and Hobby Lobby are both great spots to hit up for fairy houses and accessories. I’ve even seen fairy garden items at Dollar General. While I’ve found that while Hobby Lobby does carry fairy garden items, Michael’s seems to have a slightly larger selection of items. But you can’t go wrong either way. And, if you decide you want to make parts of your fairy garden from scratch, the craft store will have all the supplies you need for that as well. If all else fails, there’s always Etsy…

Start putting it together.

There’s really no big secret or trick here. Just go out into your yard and start placing your items! You can move them around until you find just the right spot for each house, fairy, and accessory. We’ve rearranged our garden a few times as we’ve added to it. My boys love arranging the houses and fairies all around the trees.

Don’t be afraid to create your own houses, furniture, and accessories.

It may seem intimidating to create your own pieces for your fairy garden, but it’s not as difficult as you may think. All you need is a hot glue gun, natural materials (sticks, leaves, etc.), and a few store-bought accessories. My boys and I created a throne for the fairy queen, a merry-go-round, a see-saw, a swing, a ladder for the fairy door, an entry gate, and lights for our fairy garden. It takes a bit of trial and error, but it’s so much fun to be able to create your own pieces! If you want a little bit of guidance, check your local library for books on how to create pieces for your fairy garden.

Plant Some Flowers and Foliage.

I wanted to add a bit of color to our fairy garden so we purchased some flowers and planted them in front of the trees. I also happened to have a fountain, metal mushrooms, and dragonfly stake I had purchased a few years back at a Renaissance Festival, so I added those for some extra flair. Then I threw some brown mulch in there to finish the look. Crazy easy!
