Your Pediatric Toothpaste Questions Answered
Your child’s first tooth is a major milestone. It marks a new stage – and is often accompanied by a new list of questions from first-time parents. Wild Smiles Children’s Dentistry can help answer those questions!
To ensure optimal oral health for even the youngest patients, our knowledgeable team has provided answers to the questions parents ask most often.
Q: When should I start brushing my child’s teeth?
A: As soon as the first one erupts! Be sure to brush twice daily, establishing healthy habits from the very start.
Q: How much toothpaste should I use?
A: It is recommended that children up to age three use no more than a smear or “rice-size” amount of toothpaste, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Beginning at age three, once your child can spit effectively, a “pea-size” amount is recommended.
Q: Should I use a fluoridated toothpaste?
A: While you may have heard conflicting opinions on fluoridated toothpaste, today’s experts recommend its use. Fluoride strengthens enamel, which is especially important in the development of baby teeth.
Q: What about a “training” toothpaste?
A: While some brands offer “training” toothpastes, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends using the appropriate-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste instead. Most “training” toothpastes do not contain fluoride, lacking the powerful tooth-strengthening additive.
