Dear Mama, It’s MAY :: A poem of solidarity in a month of crazy

0

On the last day of April you scroll through your phone
In a rare quiet moment with coffee, alone
To prepare and to plan – get ahead for the day
When you realize in horror the next month is… MAY!

“But I am not ready,” you think as you tap
Day by day diving into the calendar app.
Every moment is filled with an alert or a chime.
There’s not enough money and not enough time.

There’s an end-of-year party for each club and each sport
And end-of-year reading for each class book report
There are cookies to send (store-bought on a tray)
You have Venmos to Venmo and PayPals to pay.

There are four or five days worth of standardized tests
Which require calm, soothing bedtimes and plenty of rest.
But how can you get them in bed on time
When you’re scheduled to be at the ball field till nine?

And Mother’s Day’s here so you’d better plan brunch
And the gifts and the flowers and lemonade punch
Graduations, promotions and outfits for each
And if you can swing it a deposit for that trip to the beach.

And Field Day is nearing – your kid wants you there
But you’re booked on a plane flying back from O’Hare.
If you switch to the red-eye you’ll make it for sure
To see that sweet victory in class tug-of-war.

And since you’re back early and don’t miss a beat
Now you can work on your summer sitter spreadsheet!
There are camps to sign up for, deposits to pay.
(When I grow up I want to be my kids one day!)

And If I see you asleep at the stoplight of Gervais and Huger
I’ll tap the horn ever so gently so you’ll know that it’s me.
Moms all over the nation are singing our tune.
So why don’t we just call it and skip right to June?
