Why You Deserve a Girls Weekend

why you deserve a girls weekend - columbia sc moms blog

Girls Weekend. It is a tradition I have kept for many years and it has kept me sane, no doubt about it.

Here’s why….

I need the time to relax, reflect and renew my sense of self. My girlfriends don’t “want” anything from me. I don’t need to do their laundry, pay for their college or make sure their lunch is packed. We just get together, laugh like crazed women of the wild, dance all-night, eat breakfast at 3 a.m., shop until we drop and then return to our families ready to become mom extraordinaire once again.

But it’s not just about meeting my needs as an individual and a mother, it’s also about meeting the needs of my family.

When mom is so drained of every ounce of patience, perseverance and passion that she cannot bear to fill up one more sippy cup, braid one more head of hair or smile one more time at her husband’s corny jokes, it’s time for a break. It can be tough for mom to leave her kids, especially if they are still very small. But the long term benefits can far exceed the short term uncomfortableness.

I found myself in this tough spot of parenting recently, where I love my daughter and my family, but I needed some time away — some girl time to reconnect, unwind and just be “me” outside of motherhood and family life. So my gals and I planned a trip.

It was so worth it. And the best part is, it doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. You don’t have to save up for those fancy vacations at top-notch destinations (unless you want to!). You can have just as much fun locally, or within driving distance, without breaking the bank.

Girls week-end in the Big Apple!
My “splurge” weekend – the Big Apple with my besties. SOOOO worth it!

Personally, my friends and I prefer the beach. Myrtle Beach to be exact. It’s just far enough that we are truly “getting away” while also offering a fun road trip BFF style where we gab about everything under the sun and eat way too many snacks that are on the “non-diet” list. (But who cares, you’re on vacation, right?)

Other great options are the up and coming Charlotte area (Ikea anyone?) or the charm of the Lowcounty found in Charleston (restaurants for daaaaays!). Heck, just save your gas money and stay at one of the fancy hotels in the Vista. Splurge on one of those food tours and shop at all those cute places in Five Points. Columbia really does have a lot to do if you look at it from the eyes of someone who is not buried in responsibilities.

It doesn’t have to be anything that requires a ton of advanced planning. You can make it as big or small of an event as you like. What matters most is that you are together, enjoying one another’s company.

We, as women today, are under such pressure to be the perfect mom. It does not matter if we are a stay-at-home mom, a work-at-home mom, or a mom that goes off to work sixty hours outside of the home — we all are so busy that we don’t take time for us as individuals.

This needs to change.

We need time with friends. We need to remember who we are outside of our families. We need to bond and strengthen the female relationships in our life that were so important before we became a mother. They are still important today, and you aren’t letting your family down by giving them attention.

Personally, I’ve already began planning my next outing, and I cannot wait for November when my posse and I will head ‘em up and move ‘em out. So, pick a place, grab some friends and go find your happy self again! You won’t regret it, and you’ll come back recharged and ready to take on motherhood with a fresh new outlook.

Got any great ideas for a girls weekend? We’d love to hear about them!
