Our History:
The Lexington County Recreation Commission was created by an act of the Legislature in 1968 as a Special Purpose District. The Commission as an active, functioning body with employees began operations in January, 1970. The organization began with no facilities and no budget and has since developed the many facilities and various programs enjoyed by the citizens today. On July 1, 1980, Lexington County Council requested the Commission absorb into its operation an existing senior citizen program, then administered by Richland Lexington Council on Aging. On July 1, 1982, we unofficially became the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission.

Our Mission Statement:
Our mission is to improve the quality of life for all citizens through creative and meaningful life enriching experiences. This is done through the provisions of program services, facilities and education.

If you have children ages eight weeks through four years and are in need of on-the-spot child care, St. Martin’s Drop-In Nursery is here for you. On Mondays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., we provide loving, non-curricular care for your child.

The Drop-in Nursery is located in The Commons, our 17,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Christian formation and ministry building constructed and dedicated in 2013. Classrooms are arranged by age group along Rainbow Hall inside The Commons. You enter the building from the double doors located at the drop-off canopy in the back parking lot. When dropping off your child, please enter the parking lot from Clemson Avenue and depart through the Winthrop Avenue exit.

Established in 1972 to serve as an outreach ministry for the greater Columbia community, the Drop-In Nursery has been recognized twice by Palmetto Parent Magazine as the best Drop-In in the community.

The nursery is directed year-round by Kathy Lentz, who has overseen this St. Martin’s ministry for the past 25 years.

Reservations are not required; however, space is limited based on safety ratios. We charge an hourly rate. The ministry also provides free child care for families volunteering within the parish or attending worship services.

For more information about the St. Martin’s Drop-In Nursery, contact Director Kathy Lentz.
