Easter, Modified

Our family's Easter celebration is usually as big as Thanksgiving. Due to the current state of the world, this year we will have to celebrate a little differently. We will celebrate Easter, modified.

I have a large family. We do everything together. By everything, I mean we eat to celebrate everything. Every single holiday.

Easter is usually as big as Thanksgiving for us. However, COVID-19 has shifted our family dynamic and the way we are used to fellowshipping with one another.

So this year, we will have Easter, modified.

My daughter and I both fall into the high-risk category (if we were to contract COVID-19), so I have been extra careful to only go out when absolutely necessary. We have not spent time with our family at all. We have done a few quick drive-by trips to drop things off or pick things up, but we have not spent any quality time.

This is new for us. This is hard.

My daughter has been hyper-aware of Easter. I have no idea why. We have barely watched TV with commercials, and I don’t have a calendar in the house that would tell her it’s Easter. I think her little bunny ears have some sort of transmitter listening for Easter eggs. The girl lives for a good egg hunt!

I had to figure out how to make a memorable Easter happen. Has anyone else tried to shop for Easter basket supplies online? It has not been easy!

Luckily, I found some pre-filled plastic eggs online. I’m going to hide them around the house since it’s likely to rain on Sunday – I originally planned to do this outside.

We have also colored eggs for the neighborhood egg hunt and have placed them in our windows. Saturday we will ride around for the neighborhood hunt. Hopefully, we can find at least one house participating!

Here is our plan for Easter Sunday:

• Wake up and get dressed for our online church service. I had already purchased an Easter dress for my daughter, so even though we will be at home, we are going to dress up anyway. We will have crackers and water so we can partake in Communion.

• I will cook a very scaled-down dinner. We are used to eating with at least twenty people and typically having too much food. So this year, I will cook enough for us to eat dinner, and have one leftover meal. I found thick-cut ham slices at Kroger and will figure out how to jazz them up to make them tasty – probably with pineapple slices and brown sugar. Along with that will be a vegetable, a starch, and some sort of dessert.

• I will give my daughter her Easter gifts – that are not in a basket…I hope I have a spring themed gift bag in my stash! She will be getting a few spring outfits and a bunny purse that she screamed for while I was scrolling Target.

• We will have an egg hunt. She will have to hide in her room while I hide the eggs.

• Lastly, we will eat dinner and watch a movie. Maybe we’ll watch Peter Rabbit. Seems appropriate.

I’m sure that sporadically throughout the day we will have many video chats with family and friends. It has been difficult to adapt to our current way of life, but we are truly trying to make the best of it.

I hope you enjoy your Easter, modified! How will you be celebrating this year?
