If you made the decision to take on the responsibility of educating your child at home, no doubt you have been inundated with a ton of information. While researching homeschooling, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information available regarding education theories and curriculum. The decision to homeschool may be a simple one, but deciding how to homeschool can cause even the most determined parents to want to run screaming for the hills.

We made the decision to home school our young son and are now facing the daunting how. Classical, traditional, Charlotte Mason, Montessori, unit studies, eclectic, unschooling, Waldorf, the words are familiar but the context is strange to my novice ears. Waldorf? Wasn’t the the grumpy guy on the balcony on The Muppet Show? Charlotte Mason? She sounds like a friend of my grandma.

And then the self-doubt starts.

What if I do it wrong? What if he doesn’t learn what he should? What if I choose the wrong curriculum? What if I mess up? And the biggie for a lot of folks:

What about math?!?!

Take a breath, mama! I’m here to help!

Taking responsibility for your child’s education can be an intimidating prospect to say the least. And when you wade in knee-deep and realize you are completely out of your depth and swimming in unfamiliar waters, it can be down right terrifying. At least it is for me.

Over the next few months, I will be exploring and explaining several different types of homeschooling and educational philosophies. As I research and learn, I’ll share information with you and we can navigate this new territory together. Columbia SC Moms Blog contributor Kristi Bothur will write companion pieces along the way explaining the logistics and mechanics of homeschooling, while I discuss theory and finding what works for your child and your family.

First up, Classical Education Theory! It’s coming soon, so don’t miss it!
