If the Moms Had Oscars

Oscar, Cup, Trophy, Gold, Replica, Gloss, Award, Winner

This is the time of year we celebrate the stars of Hollywood for their mesmerizing accomplishments in the art of film.

But, wouldn’t it be nice if moms were acknowledged with the same red carpet and little golden man? More importantly, shouldn’t we celebrate the creating and raising of human beings for no money at least as much as we idolize people for make-believing for a lot of money? No? Just me?

I mean, honestly, we wouldn’t have that kind of time to get ready, but IF we had a night of honoring those mom accomplishments, what would it look like?

Here is my take on just some of the awards to give out:

Best Family Picture

Getting family pictures is an acrobatic achievement where you pull together all members and despite the chaos and suffering that ensues, manage to produce a finished product that looks like a happy family not sweating, or peeing, through their nice clothes.

Best Supporting Mom

Moms who support other moms are the GOAT. At least, I think that’s what the kids are calling it now. So whether you bring a casserole, or pass down a boppy pillow and backpack carrier, or just tell them “you’re doing a good job,” you are doing important work.

Best Original Song

Sometimes you forget the words, sometimes you just can’t take the same song another time. Here’s to all the moms who got babies to sleep or toddlers to chill with a completely original composition.

Best Endless Documentary

This one is for the mom who provided information for upwards of hours per day on infinite topics including the never ending one: why?

Best Costume Design

It’s the absolute last minute, and there is a theme day or class play at your child’s school. Congratulations, you dug through closets and craft drawers and googled desperately, and you pulled it off! Maybe even got some pins on Pinterest.

Best Visual Effects

This award focuses on a holiday to remember and goes to the mom who pulled out every stop to make a magical, picture-perfect experience for her family that they will look back on years later and hurt how much they enjoyed it.

Best Make-Up and Hairstyles

For a teen or preteen that shows zero appreciation or toddler who physically fights you while you do it… Mom, you’re the real MVP.

Best Director

You call the shots, make the appointments, plan the meals, schedule the trips, wrap the presents. Maybe you run a household full-time while trying to make a dollar and volunteering in your community when no one else can. Or maybe you are keeping your home in order while keeping everyone on their toes at work full-time. Maybe you are somewhere in between.

We all know it’s not a competition. Roll out the red carpet, fellow mom stars, because, as they say, we are all winners here. And, you can reach out to us to have a local mom featured in our Moms to See in the 803 series for being awesome and doing great things in our community!

Paula Billingsley
Originally from Columbia, Paula has also lived in NC, Florida, Alaska, and the UK before returning, after her husband’s deployment, to start USC School of Law. After passing the bar, working with education nonprofits, and going back for her Masters in English, she’s set aside being an active attorney for now to focus on her health, writing, and raising her baby girl, Evy. Paula knows life does not usually go as expected, like being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and sometimes it goes better, like eloping or adopting her best book review buddy, Evy! She binges on good tv, good books, good chocolate, good tea, and good conversation. She’s also a fan of winning, whether at board games or yoga. At home, she enjoys making art, music, stories, and tasty food with her family including two wild puppies, Poppy and Petra. Out and about, she enjoys being involved in theatre and music, like at Town Theatre, enjoying the outdoors and wildlife, attending Windsor United Methodist Church, shopping, volunteering, and traveling on the cheap! She does not enjoy laundry, social injustice, environmental destruction, the patriarchy, coffee, soda, kale, or pants. She’s excited and thankful to pursue her calling and bring her child up in this kid friendly town.
