My Lego Obsession

2

Yes, you read that title correctly. I said my Lego obsession. Not my kids, but mine. If you don’t believe me, ask my husband. He’ll more than gladly tell you. He’s always teasing me about it, and telling my kids that I play with their Legos after they go to bed. I mean…he’s not wrong.

I’ve heard a lot of moms say how much they hate Legos. They hate finding them all over the house, and especially, stepping on them. No one likes that. But I am not that mom. I love Lego!

It all started when my oldest received his first Lego set. It was, of course, a Star Wars set, as we are a Star Wars obsessed family. He and I had so much fun putting it together, and would play with it often. Soon enough, he had another Lego (Star Wars) set. And then another. And then another…You can see where this is going.

My husband and I soon realized we were going to need a table for our son to play on. He accumulated quite a few Legos and couldn’t really play with them on the floor in his room anymore. So I took a trip to Tot Trade and purchased a train table, which then became our Lego table.

What started out as a small collection of Legos now looks like this:

Our (very full) Lego table

But, wait, there’s more…

Each of those drawers is packed full of Legos

While both of my boys really love Legos, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I am slightly obsessed with them myself. There’s just something about sitting down and putting together one of those builds; especially one of the larger builds with 400+ pieces (yep, we’ve got a few of those). It just feels so satisfying when you complete the build, and you have this fun new piece that is both aesthetically pleasing, and fun to play with!

On top of that, Lego is such a great way for kids (and adults) to be creative! You can use your imagination and build whatever you want. I am, by nature, a very creative person, so my Lego obsession just feeds into that.

By this point you may be wondering something…Does this Lego obsessed mama have her OWN Lego sets? Why yes, yes I do. I let my boys play with them at first, but after a while I put them on a shelf for display. I mean, my kids kept taking them apart. What is that all about? Ha! So now mommy’s Legos sit in their own separate area. And before you think I’m crazy, my 10-year-old has his own collection of sets that are for display purposes only as well.

You want to know what I love most about Legos though? The minifigures! I mean, you can find a minifigure for almost any character out there, and then some! These are what I tend to buy the most of.

Lego sells minifigure blind bags, and I buy them quite frequently. I keep the paper that’s inside and shows you all the minifigures in that particular collection, and I check them off as we get them. I also bring the paper to the store with me when I shop for new ones so I can make sure we don’t get a duplicate.

How can I make sure of that when it’s a blind bag and you don’t know what’s inside? Well, let’s just say I learned a little trick from a Lego obsessed man on YouTube who showed his viewers how to feel the pieces in the bag in order to determine which minifigure it is. I’m proud to say I’ve gotten REALLY GOOD at figuring out which figure is in the bag. I’ve only been wrong like once. And that’s saying a lot considering the fact that we have over 200 minifigures. Yep. I’ve counted.

Speaking of minfigures…if you ever take a trip to Legoland, be sure to bring some with you. You can trade your minifigures for new ones with the Legoland employees, and at the stores in the park. It’s so much fun! My family took a trip there in 2019 and will be going again for Spring Break this year

Last year, my family and I watched Lego Masters on Fox, and just loved it. My son was upset that it’s only for adults, and kids can’t participate on the show. (Did you catch that? It’s for adults. See? I’m not the only Lego obsessed adult out there).

Just a few weeks ago I discovered that Lego Masters actually started in the UK, and that there is also an Australian version. What I love about the UK version is that it’s a mixture of kids and adults who compete. There is a mother-son team, and my 10-year-old told me that if they every do a kids/adult version in the U.S., he and I will compete together. He knows the way to his mamma’s heart.

(Side note: The Australian version does NOT censor, and a few of the competitors drop some choice words. So, you may want to stick with the U.S. and UK versions when watching with your kids)

Yes, I did buy this Lego Friends treehouse set for myself as well. But I let the kids play with this one.

What can I say? I’m a Lego obsessed mama, and I love it! Instead of seeing the negative side of Legos, like stepping on them or finding them in random places in the house, I choose to see the positive. They promote creativity, give you an accomplished feeling, and are a great way to spend time with your kiddos.

Are you obsessed with Legos?

  1. Leah, you all must visit a LEGO Fest
They are perfectly amazing and intricate detail that is so unbelievable. You would totally be mouth dropped fascination for the whole day. There is life size Cars Movie, “Lightning McQueen” vehicle, life size characters, a pile of million lego pieces that you can lay down inside. We visited our first in Charlotte, NC several years ago and then when my daughter became interested we returned to one in Columbia SC. Of course with our pandemic they may not have a LEGO fest tour currently. They are truly a lot of fun and I agree the creativity is endless.
