We are so excited to partner with the Columbia Children’s Theatre again to bring you a special, fun-filled opening night family event for the production of Hansel & Gretel!
Join the Columbia SC Moms Blog at The Columbia Children’s Theatre and experience the highly entertaining and family-friendly productions both parents and kids in the Midlands have been raving about! Known as the premiere theatre for families and young audiences, they are proving this reputation accurate once again with their upcoming performance of Hansel & Gretel! And the best part is, it’s a show both parents AND kids will enjoy!
But it’s more than your typical show … we’ve gone all out to bring you an evening of entertainment “beyond the gingerbread” for a night filled with tons of fun for all ages!
The Commedia Hansel & Gretel
After a year off, the Spaghetti and Meatball Players are back for summer shenanigans! Join Columbine, Rosetta, Pantalone, Punchin, and Arlequino as they present the tale of Hansel & Gretel like you’ve never seen before. This original adaptation is performed in the traditional style of commedia dell’arte, a largely improvisational style of street theatre originating in 16th century Italy. With lots of physical comedy, audience interaction, jokes, and surprises, this hilarious “fractured fairy tale” will delight children and adults of all ages!

We’ll have plenty of activities for kids to enjoy before the show begins…
This one-of-a-kind event will challenge your little ones to find their way out of the forest with our bread crumb scavenger hunt, earning them a special prize. Then head over and try your hand at tossing the evil witch in the oven or getting a gumdrop hole in one.
Next take advantage of our photo booth full of fun props! Our professional photographer, Emily Ann Photography, will be there to capture every moment! She has the amazing ability to capture the perfect candid snapshots, as well as help you strike the best pose in our photo booth. Speaking of dressing up…
Dress the Part and Win Big!
Pick a side! Come outfitted as the wicked witch, Hansel, Gretel or another favorite character from the story. We’ll be selecting a best dressed for several different categories during the evening — youth, teen, group — so go all out! The winner will receive… (We can’t give away ALL the details! But trust us, it’s something worth waiting for!)

Art Inspired Entertainment for the Kids!
Emerald’s Artistry Face Painting, one of the most popular face painters in Columbia, will be available to create custom designs from a wide selection of designs. Take advantage of their expertise to give you an extra edge in the costume contest, or pick out a favorite just for fun.
Interactive Arts and Crafts – Fun While Learning
The folks from My Gym are dedicated to seeing children exceed in all areas of life. They have developed an Art Explorers program that focuses a learning concept and theme, then applying it to an art activity to reinforce the concept and encourage creativity. They are bringing an interactive arts and crafts table FULL of various fun activities your child can create … all centered around the theme of Hansel & Gretel!
Delicious Food
Be sure to bring your appetite! Chicken Salad Chick, known for their fresh, extraordinary chicken salad, gourmet soups, side salads and delicious desserts, will be bringing lots of their favorite items and sides for everyone to enjoy! With 15 varieties of chicken salad (and much more), their is something for everyone – and all are ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!
