Pop-Up Summer Drive-In Movie Series Coming to Columbia

0

I’m one of those nostalgic people. I long for the summer nights (sung perfectly by Danny Zuko) and drive-in movies. I would have been the perfect bobbysoxer in a poodle skirt!

If those thoughts bring a smile to your face, like they do mine, get ready because What’s Next Midlands is bringing the drive-in experience to us this summer! Their newest project, a pop-up drive-in movie theater will start this Saturday, May 20th, and feature a movie each month through August!

This Saturday, May 20th, it all starts with Family Night and a viewing of The Sandlot. Who doesn’t remember “You’re killin’ me Smalls!”?

June 17th will surely be a sell-out with Throwback Night and the ever popular Grease. There really couldn’t be a better movie to show at a drive-in movie theater, could there?

July 22nd is Horror Night and will feature The Shining … I will surely not be in attendance for this, but for all my friends looking for a good scare, have a blast!

Rounding out the series on August 12th is Star Wars Night and Rogue One, the first of the Anthology series.

Besides these fantastic movies, spectators can also get excited about face painting, outdoor games, classic movie snacks and more. It really does sound like the perfect Saturday night! Just be sure to bring along some bug spray!

The venue is the Historic Speedway in Cayce and gates will open at 7 p.m. with the movie starting shortly after sundown (8:30-9 p.m.).  Audio will be transmitted via your car’s radio – just like in the olden days.

Passes for regular spaces can be purchased here, though a particular spot cannot be guaranteed. One pass per car is $20, and you’ll need to be sure to print out and bring your pass with you. There are some VIP spots for $30 which give you a front row view, but those are all sold out for this Saturday. But personally, I think you can get just as good of a view with regular admission.

Anyone wanting to bring a picnic blanket, chairs and coolers can walk-in for $5 per person. And yes, you can bring in your own food + cooler!

These tickets are going to be hot, hot, hot! … so be sure to get those parking passes ahead of time! For additional details, rain-out dates and to purchase those passes, Summer Drive In Series is the site to visit!

Meanwhile, I’ve got Danny Zuko singing “Sandy” at the drive-in on my brain now! This is going to be so great – I hope to see you there!
