Shake Break: Celebrate National Vanilla Milkshake Day in Columbia SCVanilla sometimes gets a bad rap for being, well, vanilla. But sometimes vanilla is the only flavor your kids will accept. And with melty weather and meltdown-y kids in the forecast, we’re all glad National Vanilla Milkshake Day (June 20th) is here!

Around our house, we love nothing more than climbing into the car in the early evening after pool hair has been freshly washed and summer jammies donned in search of a sweet treat to top off a light summer supper. Here’s a rundown of seven can’t-miss variations on the season’s most comforting (and universally accepted by all ages) milkshake flavor, all right in your backyard in Columbia, SC. And we’ve thrown in a few anything-but-vanilla options for your wild child (or yourself).

THE THROWBACK

Rosewood Dairy Bar: If you haven’t tried this throwback Cola landmark, put it on your summer bucket list. Their small vanilla shake is only $2.05 and is truly a classic. Not-so-vanilla: Try the Connor Shaw Milkshake made with chocolate ice cream and topped with peanut butter and hot fudge.

THE ICON

Zesto: The West Columbia location be known for its iconic “giant chocolate-dipped cone” that has become a harbinger of deliciousness in triangle city, but their vanilla milkshakes are downright tasty, too. Zesto also has locations on Forest Drive and in Chapin. Not-so-vanilla: Try the Pineapple shake for a summertime treat with a hint of the tropics.

THE INNOVATER

Cupcake Down South: Sure, you know Cupcake Down South as the perfect stop for perfectly-iced individual treats, but what you may not know is that they serve the Cake Shake. Your cupcake of choice is blended with vanilla ice cream for a frosty and decadent treat. Yowza. Not-so-vanilla: Try their gluten free flavor of the day blended into a gluten free Cake Shake!

THE SPLURGE

Kaminskys: Maaaaybe you shouldn’t go in your jammies, but it’s such a treat to let your kids drool over the dessert case, get a table and enjoy a family moment that’s, well, just desserts. Their vanilla shake is all dressed up in a pretty glass with oodles of whipped cream. Not-s0-vanilla: Try the salted caramel with vanilla bean ice cream, pretzels, caramel and sea salt.

THE DIET BUSTER

Grill Marks: They start with house-made Madagascar vanilla ice cream  and blend to frosty vanilla perfection. Not-so-vanilla: Try the Grill Marks Freakshakes, namely the Cookies & Cream Dirt. They take a regular milkshake and add chocolate icing, Oreos, more ice cream, whipped cream, gummy worms, and Oreo crumbles.

THE HOMETOWN HONEY

Sweet Cream Company: If you are craving small-batch deliciousness and elevated flavors, try this Main Street sweet hangout for a unique and purely local spin on frozen goodness. They will usually have the flavorful Madagascar vanilla, and just ask them to blend it into a Madagascar milkshake. Not-so-vanilla: Flavors like Earl Grey and Cinnamon Sugar could be on the menu, and you can sign up for specials and intel on the #secrethandshakeflavor on their website

THE DRIVE-THRU DELIGHT:

Rush’s: Sometimes small people fall asleep in the car after a large time at the pool/lake/splash pad and should not be disturbed. A Columbia staple for dairy deliciousness since the 1940’s, Rush’s offers 10 locations across the region, so you can get your shake fix en route to wherever. Not-so-vanilla: Try the strawberry for a summertime flavor that will not dissapoint.
