ABC’s of Summer Activities in Columbia | Columbia SC Moms BlogHow is it late summer already?! Before you know it, it will be time for the kids to go back to school. So make the most of the rest of your summer! Here are a few ideas to enjoy some family time before school starts – our official “ABC’s of Summer Activities in Columbia!” Choose a letter today and embark on a new adventure.

A is for Attractions. Learn some of our city’s history and take a tour of the South Carolina State house. Free guided and self-guided tours of the State House are available Monday – Friday.

B is for Brunch. Check out these places to enjoy brunch with the family.  

C is for Candy. Head to the Mast General Store downtown for some old fashioned candy in barrels.

D is for Donuts. Who doesn’t love donuts? Duck Donuts just opened in Columbia.

E is for Eclipse. The Total Solar Eclipse is on August 21 (right before school starts!). Check out the eclipse events around town that weekend. Make sure you have eclipse glasses to watch (you can pick some up at Richland Library).

F is for Fireflies. Check out a home game at Spirit Communications Park and cheer on the Fireflies baseball team before the season is over.

G is for Games. Head to Frankie’s Fun Park to play a round of mini-golf, race on go-karts or play arcade games with your kids.

H is for Hiking. Explore Congaree National Park trails and hike through this park that contains some of the tallest trees in Eastern North America.

I is for Ice Cream. Indulge in some unique flavors at Sweet Cream Company on Main Street. Current flavors include black sesame ginger and fig & honey sorbet featuring figs from city roots.

J is for journey. Take a last minute day trip to Charlotte for some shopping or a fun day trip to Carowinds, catch some rays and explore the history in Charleston or find some mountains in the Upstate.

K is for Kiln. Stir up those creative juices and paint some pottery with your kids at the Mad Platter.

L is for Lake. Cool down from the heat with a lake day out at Lake Murray, Lake Wateree or some of the other watering holes around the Midlands.

M is for Murals. New art murals are springing up all over Columbia as public art has increased over the past few years. Walk, drive or bike around downtown Columbia to see how many murals you can find. You can find them on the sides of buildings and restaurants and in the Lincoln Street Tunnel.

N is for New Releases. Enjoy one last summer movie with the kids in the theater.

O is for Outdoors. Take a kayak trip down the river or a sunset paddle on Lake Murray with Carolina Outdoor Adventures.

P is for Puppet. Check out the Columbia Marionette Theater. Little Red Riding Hood is their current show this season until September 2.

Q is for Quiet Time. Many of the Richland County Library locations have completed their renovations and are ready for you to come see the new and improved spaces.

R is for Rocks. The latest scavenger hunt craze is hunting for painted rocks around the city at public parks, restaurants, etc. Then, either re-hide the rocks in a new local spot or paint your own and hide them.

S is for Soda City Market. Now, extended to three blocks on Main Street, this farmers market has great things to explore, eat or buy every Saturday morning.

T is for Tours. Columbia has several museums to explore including the South Carolina State Museum, the Columbia Museum of Art or the Robert Mills House

U is for Up in the Air. Jump around the trampoline park at Plex Hi-Wire in Irmo or Sandhills and even try out the Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course. For your littles, check out Jumping Jacks at the Sandhills location ($8 and they can jump all day). 

V is for Vegetables. The Palmetto Tasty Tomato Festival is August 5. This family fun festival will feature foods from local farmers, farm tours and live music.

W is for Water. Find a splash park at Sesquicentennial State Park, Saluda Shoals or one of these other places.

X is for eXhibits. Edventure Children’s Museum has over 350 hands-on exhibits for kids to explore.

Y is for Yummy Food. Sign your child up for a Kroger Chef Junior workshop where a Kroger Chef will guide your child as they learn to create a tasty food item on their own. Each workshop lasts for approximately 20 minutes.

Z is for Zoo. Visit Riverbanks Zoo to see the animals, zip the zoo (zip line) or enjoy any of the other awesome events and programs the zoo offers.
