When Your Birth Story is UN-Blogworthy | Columbia SC Moms Blog

It was a cool winter day in SC, (so you know, it was probably 60 degrees) and I was 36.5 weeks pregnant. I was about to go to sleep when all of the sudden, POP, there goes my water! I went to the hospital and had a blissful and quick labor that ended with an amazing 6lb 10oz baby girl.

JK! (Except the part about an amazing baby girl.)

Seriously, that’s about as detailed as I will get. Labor and birth was not blissful. Or quick. It lasted 32 hours!

Who takes that long?

There’s obviously a lot more to my story, but beyond the embarrassing, I pushed a baby out my hoo-ha, you don’t need to know much else. Not just because it was painful and exhausting and I only remember it halfway, but because it’s not an experience I want to share.

Don’t get me wrong, I love reading a good birth story. The female body is amazing and I’m always super impressed by women who can write such lovely words on how their child entered the world. Add in some amazing photography skills and I will tear up every time.

But, let’s go easy on ourselves and realize you don’t HAVE to tell your story, especially in an age where so many share every aspect of their life on social media.

Sometimes the experience is too difficult to recreate. Other times it’s too complicated to tell. Sometimes it’s really not that impressive to write down. Sometimes you are too tired to take the time to write it down. Other times it’s emotional draining to recount the details. Sometimes it’s something you’d rather keep to yourself.

And you know what? THAT IS A-OKAY!

I’ve been there. My birth story is UN-blogworthy. Or rather, it won’t be out there for anyone to read. It’s a story between me, my amazing husband, and, thank God she can’t remember, our daughter, too. We will tell it when we are ready or we will keep it our story forever.

So here’s to you, mama with the UN-blogworthy birth story. You are hanging in there savoring those sweet snuggles with your babe and not worrying about writing a blog-worthy story to go along with it.

You experienced every moment and I’m sure you were awesome. There will be many more stories to come that WILL be blog-worthy, the ones you can’t wait to share every detail about, and those will be well worth the wait.

What about you? Is your story UN-blogworthy?

Lisa is a transplant from the Midwest. She was born and raised in Kansas (yes, she has seen a tornado) and spent a few years in Ohio before moving to South Carolina in 2014. She holds a degree in Biology and works as a research assistant at the USC School of Medicine. Her career in science spans 11 years and she can't imagine a job anywhere else. She has also been married to her college sweetheart for 11 years. He is a professor at USC, so they are Gamecock fans by default. They are proud parents to a spunky 2.5 year old girl who keeps them on their toes. As a family, they enjoy being outside in the wonderful southern sun, gardening, playing tennis, and going to the beach. They also are parents to 2 fur babies who still aren't sure about their little sister.
