Join the Columbia SC Moms Blog at The Columbia Children’s Theatre and experience the highly entertaining and family-friendly productions both parents and kids in the Midlands have been raving about! Known as the premiere theatre for families and young audiences, they are proving this reputation accurate once again with their upcoming holiday favorite performance of Jingle Arrgh the Way, A Pirate Christmas Adventure. And the best part is, it’s a show both parents AND kids will enjoy!

But this time it’s more than your typical show … we’ve truly embraced the spirit of the performance by bringing you the perfect blend of holiday fun and pirate mystery in a preshow event that is sure to put a smile on every face!

The Adventurous Story of Jingle Arrgh the Way

The “How I Became a Pirate” crew is back! A mysterious message left in the crow’s nest of their ship brings Captain Braid Beard and his pirate mates back to North Beach to seek out young Jeremy Jacob to help solve a riddle and find the Christmas treasure. Favorite characters, a rollicking story, great songs, and a trip to the North Pole to find “you know who” – make this Christmas pirate adventure a wonderful holiday show for the whole family. Based on a story by Melinda Long, author of “How I Became a Pirate.”

Prior to the Performance, Enjoy Themed, Preshow Activities!

We’ll have plenty of activities for kids to enjoy before the show begins…

This one-of-a-kind event will challenge your little ones to use their treasure hunting skills while helping locate a special treasure at the North Pole. Our scavenger hunt combines pirate and holiday fun, sure to keep your child on their toes and in anticipation of the events to come.

Then head over to our special pirate’s fishing hole to cast your reel into the icy waters. Will you wrangle in the prized big catch or end up with a lump of coal straight from Santa’s boot?

Next take advantage of our photo booth full of fun props! Will you be the next Captain Hook or give Elsa a run for her money? Only you can decide, and our professional photographer, Photography by Angel Kinard, will be there to capture every moment! She has the amazing ability to capture the perfect candid snapshots, as well as help you strike the best pose in our photo booth. Speaking of dressing up…

Dress the Part and Win Big!

Pick a side! Come outfitted as Blackbeard’s kin or bundle up as your favorite character from the North Pole. The staff from the Children’s Theatre, as well as the audience, will be taking note and selecting a best dressed for several different categories during the evening — youth, teen, group — so go all out! The winner will receive… (We can’t give away ALL the details! But trust us, it’s something worth waiting for!)

And that’s not all…

Art Inspired Entertainment for the Kids!

Bedazzled Unicorn Designs, one of Columbia’s newest facepainters on the scene, is full of talent and will be available to create custom designs from a wide selection of holiday, pirate and every day favorites. Take advantage of their expertise to give you an extra edge in the costume contest, or pick out a favorite just for fun.

Once you’re inspired by their work, head over to our craft table to create some of your own! Holiday and pirate inspired themes will be available for kids to show off their best skills.

Festive Food and Theatre Inspired Treats

In the true spirit of the theme of the play, Coco Yoga, one of Columbia’s hottest new yoga and smoothie bars for both kids and adults, will be on hand making a special edition smoothie for the night — PeppARRRmint! Made from only the freshest and natural ingredients, these delicious drinks are not only good, but good for you! (And the perfect way to sneak in healthy eating for your picky eater)

Next move on over to our food table of theatre inspired treats – bags of buttery popcorn, delicious handmade cake pops from Nita Sweets, delectable custom made candy apples and more. In addition, we’ll have plenty of finger foods, like chicken tenders from PDQ, one of Columbia’s newest and favorite options for fresh, hand-breaded chicken and homemade dressings, as well as nuggets from the ever popular Chick-fil-A at Saluda Pointe in Lexington.

To top it all off, enjoy our hot chocolate bar where you can taste delicious homemade hot chocolate, topped with your choice of favorites – marshmallows, chocolate chips, peppermint crumbles and much more! It will truly put you in the holiday spirit!

Giveaways! Giveaways! Giveaways!

We’ll also have several giveaways from local businesses like Snip-its, The Little Gym, Coco Yoga, Athena In-Home Tutoring and more!

Meet the Cast … and the Man in Red Himself!

After the show, stick around to meet the cast … including the man in red himself! Photo opportunities will be available, as well as autograph signing, so be sure to keep your playbill handy! It’s going to be a night you truly don’t want to miss!

    • Great question! We asked the theatre and here is the response they provided, “I think the show would appeal to a wide range…most specifically, kids in grades 1 or 2 who have read How I Became A Pirate will identify with all of the characters. That being said, there’s plenty of physical comedy, music and dancing to entertain preschool kids, and a healthy dose of pop culture jokes to please older kids and adults. When we did How I Became A Pirate last year, it played well to everyone from pre-K through middle school. Any younger than kindergarten I usually say it depends on the child…some 18-24-month-olds will be mesmerized for the hour, while others don’t last 10 minutes.”

Hope this helps, and hope to see you there!
