“I’m so excited!” my son said as we hopped in the car to head out to breakfast before his soccer game. And he had good reason to be … The Flying Biscuit Cafe not only offers one of the best breakfasts in Columbia, but the warm, inviting atmosphere and friendliness of the staff lets you know you’re in for something special.
We arrived around 10 a.m. on Saturday and the place was packed … which tells you right there it’s going to be good. And while we had to wait outside for about 15 minutes before our table was ready, there was cornhole, conversation, and laughs that made the time fly by. It gave us a chance to connect as a family, which is one of our favorite parts of dining out.
Once inside, we were ushered to a cozy table, and immediately noticed the one-of-a-kind Columbia themed murals on the wall. We were surrounded by other families, couples catching up, and groups of friends out for a leisurely dining experience. We felt right at home.
We grabbed the menu and there was TONS to choose from. What pressed upon me most was the combination of familiar breakfast and lunch favorites, as well as dishes with a southern spin to appeal to the more adventurous palates. I also loved that they had a drink menu filled with options like mimosa flights, build your own bloody mary, mules, spiked lemonade, and more!
Must-Try Menu Items
For the Person Who Likes a Little Bit of Everything
Florida Sunshine Waffle Breakfast – The name alone brings a smile to your face. This option is a great choice for the individual who likes a mix of savory and sweet. A large waffle topped with strawberries, blueberries and bananas is perfect for kids and parents alike, and it comes with two eggs any way you like them (I recommend over easy), chicken sage sausage patties, creamy grits (this are to die for – get them regardless of the entree you select) and one of their signature fluffy biscuits (side note: my family said the biscuits were their favorite part of the meal … they don’t call it The Flying Biscuit Cafe for nothing)!
For the Adventurous Eater
Southern Scramble – Tired of the traditional omelet or eggs with a standard side? Love the kick only southern food can provide? Then this one is for you! Three fluffy eggs scrambled with applewood bacon, spicy vegan collard greens, onions and cheddar cheese, along with creamy grits and a signature biscuit. My husband couldn’t finish it all in one sitting and told the rest of us hands off his leftovers!
For the One Who Likes to Build Their Own and Mix Things Up
“Oh My Grits” Bowl – My son is notorious for liking to mix all his food together and do this own thing, so the grits bowl was perfect for him! Plus, it was fun for him to build his own creation. (“Hey Mama! Try what I made!”) Start with grits as your base and choose four options from their protein, cheese and vegetable list. Want more than four? No problem. You can select additional items for $1.49 each. Plus, you get one of their fluffy biscuits too. My son chose shrimp, bacon, onion, and cheddar cheese … and he’s been having me try to recreate this for him at home ever since! I just can’t quite nail the special touch The Flying Biscuit Cafe adds … which just means another reason to dine with them more often (and less clean up at home for me). A win-win!
We left will full bellies, full hearts, a few leftovers, and plan to come back SOON!
