Tackling the SC State Fair with a Toddler

1

It’s officially that time of year! The South Carolina State Fair, a local family favorite, returns October 11-22 to the Capital City! While there is lots to see and do, there’s always the challenge of how to best tackle all there is to offer with a toddler in tow.

And… is it even worth it at such a young age?

Our answer… a resounding YES! Just be sure to prepare yourself ahead of time with these tips from moms who have “been there, done that” with a little one at the fair.

How to Control an Energetic Toddler

Consider the time of day you plan on visiting. Typically weekday mornings are low volume due to school-aged children being in the classroom and most adults’ work schedule. During this time, it’s easier to bring a stroller since it’s less crowded. Because there is lots of opportunity to wander, you’ll definitely want a way to contain them.

If you plan on going in the afternoon or weekend, try babywearing. It can be hard to walk through the crowd as it is, let alone with a stroller. Add in wires and other debris (both natural and unnatural) on the ground, and it can become a hassle. The one thing I don’t suggest, is having your toddler free to walk around.

To Ride, or not to Ride?

The rides available for the littlest fair patrons are fun! My toddler loved riding the spinning strawberries, the bees, and of course the carousel! Just be aware there may be some rides you need to accompany your child on, so wear something comfortable you can easily maneuver in.

Going to the fair with a toddler and older kids? Rides can cause a bit of friction. Most rides only allow children over 3 feet, which could cause a tantrum from the child who isn’t tall enough. I’ve dealt with a “fomo” toddler meltdown at the fair, and it’s not fun! If possible, go to the fair with as many adults as possible. That way someone is available to take a fussy toddler or older child to explore other parts of the fair.

How to Keep a Cool Temperature and Temper!

The fair has a lot of awesome crafts and delicious food, but let’s face it, it can be super HOT unless you’re in an air conditioned building. Plan where you are going, and when. While the fair takes place in October, this is “famously hot” Columbia. Expect high temperatures, and keep in mind black asphalt covers most of the fairgrounds.

Considering breaking up your time between outdoor and indoor activities. Play a few games or take in a couple of rides, then head into a building for a break. Keep in mind there is lots to see and do, and you can easily be there for hours, so plan your time accordingly between inside and outside. We also walked all around the craft and educational buildings which are usually either air conditioned or covered.

Tickets and What to Expect Financially

Bring lots of cash. No toddler wants to wait for you to get money out the ATM. There are so many wonderful games for toddlers. They do cost a bit of money. The memories are worth the extra cost.

While we are talking cash, what about all the different ticket options? Since we took toddlers, we decided not to purchase the pay one price tickets and went with the regular tickets instead. Having a set amount of tickets helps you set expectations with your little one on when it’s time to stop. Once the tickets are gone, it’s a clear signal to them rides are over and it’s time to leave or move on to another activity.

It Wouldn’t be the Fair Without Animals!

Be sure to take your child to see the animals! There are barns full of livestock, bunnies, birds and so much more! Not to mention a petting zoo and the opportunity to watch live shows with different animals showcasing their skills. Don’t forget there is a circus too! Aside from the carousel, the animals were my toddler’s favorite part.

Overall the fair is a great time, regardless of age! Just be sure to set clear expectations and be prepared for what to expect (especially with a toddler) before you go.

Have you visited the fair with a toddler? What tips would you add to the list?
