I recently took a risk and cut my hair in a style that is a little edgy and a little scary. I’ve maintained a nice angled bob for several years. I love the cut, but there was one addition I’ve been wanting to try: The undercut.
If you haven’t seen this style, it’s where you shave the underside of your hair. Long hair or short hair. It works either way. I was skeptical at first and a little afraid I’d hate it, but I’ve come to really like my hair again because of it.
Here are my top 5 reasons to get an undercut:
1. The mom bun is on point!
With an undercut, you don’t have those hairs around your neck falling out of your mom bun. You only have half of your hair to even put in the bun. You still may need a few bobby pins, but that’s it. It’s so much easier!
2. Your neck is relieved to get some air.
We all know Columbia is “famously hot,” so less hair on your neck this time of year is a major win. Plus, when you work out, the sweat just runs right off your head. No more wet hair on your neck!
3. Everything feels lighter.
This was a new feeling for me. I had super fine hair pre-pregnancy, but my post-pregnancy hair became thicker and heavier. It’s feels so great to relieve some of the weight under my angled bob.
4. You can be as creative with it as you want.
Some people do a small section, some do a large portion of their head. You can do one side or both sides or just underneath. You can also shave some cool designs in it if you want. Search “women’s undercut” on any social media platform and you will see plenty of examples. I haven’t been brave enough to try a design yet, but I just may do it soon!
5. It’s fun!
This is the most important one. Doing something different and risky is fun! Besides, it’s just hair. It’ll grow back. Eventually.
I felt a compulsion to do it and I am super glad I did. I am one day in, and I think I still feel razor burn. I’m also superconscious of there not being hair on the back of my head.
My hair is lying flatter which was the goal. There is less hair to wash and get tangled so it seems that is a plus.
I still need to go to a barbershop to clean up the hair right below the line of the undercut. It is hard to shave directly up to the line yourself. I foresee many trips to the barber, which has never been part of my lifestyle, so we’ll see how long that lasts.
Given that it will be 100 degrees this week, I am sure I’ll be even happier about it in a couple of days. I’ll see how I feel about it down the line.
People talk about the growing out period as being prickly which sounds like it leads to a continuous cycle of re-shaving it, which is not necessarily a problem if I am still liking it….
Anyway, it’s just hair- and it’s not a big style commitment as it can’t be seen when the hair is down, so if you are thinking about it, go for it! It’s liberating.
